Google AI Overviews Ads Now Appear in 25% of Results — Up 394% in One Year

New data shows Google ads now appear in 25.5% of AI Overview results — up from 3% in January 2025. With AI Overviews covering 48% of all Google searches, this is already the largest GEA surface available to advertisers.

While the industry has been focused on ChatGPT’s advertising beta and Perplexity’s dramatic exit from ads, Google has been quietly building the largest Generative Engine Advertising surface in existence — and the numbers are becoming impossible to ignore.

The data

According to research published in March 2026:

  • Ads now appear in approximately 25.5% of AI Overview search results — up from roughly 3% in January 2025
  • That is a 394% year-over-year increase in ad coverage
  • AI Overviews themselves now appear on 48% of all Google searches, up 58% since December 2025
  • Google’s AI Mode has reached 75 million daily active users and processes over 1 billion monthly queries

To put that in context: when AI Overviews appear on nearly half of all Google searches, and ads appear in a quarter of those, that is a significant and growing slice of the world’s most-used search engine being served with AI-context advertising.

Which industries are most affected

BrightEdge data tracking AI Overview coverage from February 2025 to February 2026 shows the industries with the highest AI Overview presence are:

  • Healthcare: 88% of queries
  • Education: 83%
  • B2B Technology: 82%
  • Restaurants: 78%
  • Insurance: ~63%

Commercial and transactional queries — the ones most valuable to advertisers — are seeing the fastest growth. The percentage of commercial keywords triggering an AI Overview grew from 8.15% to 18.57% in the past 12 months.

How Google AI Overviews ads work

Unlike ChatGPT’s closed beta, Google AI Overviews ads require no special access or minimum commitment. They are served through existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. If your campaigns are already running, they are already eligible to appear in AI Overviews.

Ads appear above, within, or below the AI-generated summary. In February 2026, Google also launched Shopping ads with Direct Offers inside AI Mode — sponsored product recommendations embedded directly into conversational AI search results.

Eligibility is based on Google’s existing trust signals: Quality Score, ad relevance, and campaign performance — not on a separate GEA-specific setup.

What advertisers should do now

Google AI Overviews is the only GEA channel that is open to all advertisers today, at any budget. For brands that want to start building GEA experience before other platforms open up, this is the place to start.

Key actions:

  • Ensure your Search and Performance Max campaigns are active and well-optimised — these are automatically eligible
  • Focus on asset quality: ad copy, extensions, and structured data all influence AI Overview placement
  • Monitor impression share and performance data by query type as Google continues to expand AI Overview coverage

The AI Overview ad footprint will keep growing. Advertisers who understand how to perform within it now will have a structural advantage as coverage expands throughout 2026.
