Between 22 July and 11 August 2026, ChatGPT advertising stopped being a pilot and became an advertising platform. OpenAI opened its Ads Manager to anyone who wants to use it, shipped eight measurement and budgeting features in a single week, and switched on five international markets. For brands that have been waiting for the format to become accountable before committing budget, the waiting is over.
Advertise in ChatGPT opens to everyone
On 22 July 2026, OpenAI opened “Advertise in ChatGPT”, a self service Ads Manager where advertisers build campaigns, set budgets and target audiences directly. The targeting model is the part worth pausing on. Campaigns are matched to conversational context rather than to keywords alone, which means the unit of intent is the conversation a user is having, not the phrase they typed.
That distinction matters more than it first appears. In paid search, intent arrives compressed into two or three words and the advertiser reconstructs the rest. In a conversation, intent arrives with its context attached: the budget already mentioned, the constraint already stated, the alternative already rejected. Advertisers who treat ChatGPT campaigns as a keyword channel with a different interface will systematically underuse what the platform actually knows.
Eight features in one week
On 24 July, two days after the platform opened, OpenAI shipped eight updates at once. Read as a list they look like housekeeping. Read together they are the difference between an experiment and a channel a performance team can defend in a budget meeting.
Conversion optimised campaigns (oCPC) prioritise the clicks most likely to convert while keeping per click pricing. Automatic advanced matching uses hashed customer data to attribute more conversions. Integrations with AppsFlyer and Adjust bring mobile measurement for app installs and in app events. Average daily budgets let spend fluctuate within a weekly cap, and intraday pacing spreads that spend across the day instead of front loading it. Geo exclusion allows advertisers to carve out locations. A Bulk API supports asynchronous creation and updating of campaigns, ad groups and ads at scale.
Those are the components of an ad platform an agency can actually operate. Attribution, pacing, exclusions and bulk operations are unglamorous, and their absence is exactly what kept serious budget away during the pilot phase.
Five markets go live
On 11 August 2026, ChatGPT ads went live in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, delivering on the expansion OpenAI signalled in May. Ads are shown to logged in adult users on the Free and Go tiers. The Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers carry no advertising at all.
The format remains deliberately restrained: clickable sponsored links placed beneath the generated answer, matched to the context of the conversation. OpenAI maintains that ads do not influence the answers themselves and that conversations stay private from advertisers. Users can dismiss an ad, ask why they saw it, delete their ad data and review an Ads History showing which brands appeared and when.
What is still missing
One gap is worth naming clearly, because it shapes how a brand should plan. The Ads Manager reports on your own account. It does not reveal which prompts triggered your ads, and it does not show which competitors appeared alongside you. Anyone used to the competitive visibility of paid search will find the view unusually narrow, and third party intelligence tools are beginning to fill that space.
For GEA strategy this changes the sequencing of the work. Because you cannot see the competitive field from inside the platform, the advantage shifts towards whoever accumulates first party performance data earliest. Every week of live campaign data is a week of learning that a competitor entering in 2027 cannot buy retrospectively. That is the practical case for testing now rather than waiting for the tooling to mature.
